To the Friends of the Malakwa Community Centre Association

Over the years the Community Centre Association has done its best to foster good relations with the participating communities by providing social and cultural events and helping to supervise interaction between the government and the people living in our area. We make the hall available for events put on by government agencies and rent it to groups and families for meetings, weddings and reunions, etc. Our hall is the hub if there is an emergency for the school or community. We also host community breakfasts at Easter Sunday, Mothers Day and Fathers Day. It is the gathering place for the Remembrance Day Luncheon, the Canada Day Parade and Strawberry Social as well as the Christmas Craft Sale. All in all the Community Hall is the centre of Malakwa.

If you have been a participant in one of these events in recent years you have probably become aware that our old building is not only not big enough anymore but also quite badly in need of repair. Thousands of dollars have been spent recently trying to repair the roof to keep the building from perennial dampness, but because of the design of the structure it has been impossible to keep the moisture out. This situation and the general condition of the hall have led to community discussions and a decision to construct a new community centre in the future.

Fortunately some years ago the Community Centre Association decided to buy up the former Carney Pole property to retain it as a playing field for Malakwa and the surrounding area. The CSRD was generous with us to provide a grant to purchase this 6 acre piece of land that adjoins the Malakwa Centennial Park owned by the Malakwa Farmers Institute. It is on this large site that we would like to establish our new community building sometime in the future. We have begun the process with some fundraising and used the monies to shape out architectural drawings, had power directed to the field and a well drilled last year. Of course we realize that we may not have our new building any time in the near future, but we have tried to be creative and careful in our pursuit of a multi-functional centre that could re-establish some of the community feeling we knew in the past.

If you would like to make a contribution we could issue you an Income Tax Receipt.
